Kilauea

A former plantation town, Kilauea town itself maintains its rural flavor in the midst of the unrelenting gentrification encroaching it. Especially noteworthy are its historic lava-rock buildings, including Christ Memorial Episcopal Church on Kolo Street and the Kong Lung Company on Keneke Street, now an expensive shop.


  • Kilauea Lighthouse

    Kauai. A beacon for sea traffic since it was built in 1913, this National Historic Landmark has the largest clamshell lens of any lighthouse in the world. It's within a national wildlife refuge, where thousands of seabirds soar on the trade winds and nest on the steep ocean cliffs. more ›
